Note: Individuals may ask their Test Counselor to perform these tests for them. Otherwise, clients may perform the following self-examinations:
SELF-THROAT EXAM
(Tests for oral Gonorrhea and Chlamydia)
If you have had a penis in your mouth…
- Wash hands with soap and water.
- Open wrapping for collection swabs; discard the white shafted swab in the trash can.
- Making sure not to touch the cotton tip, remove the blue shafted swab from the wrapper.
- Open your mouth wide and wipe the cotton swab around the tonsils on both sides of the throat several times – do not touch the tongue or cheeks with the swab.
- Unscrew the cap of the tube making sure not to spill any liquid.
- Immediately place the swab into the tube, bend the blue shaft of the swab at the scoreline until it breaks – be careful not to spill/splash any contents.
- Screw the cap of the tube back on tightly.
- Wash hands again with soap and water.
SELF-RECTAL EXAM
(Tests for rectal Gonorrhea and Chlamydia)
If you have had a penis in your rectum…
- Wash hands with soap and water.
- Open wrapping for collection swabs; discard the white shafted swab in the trash can.
- Making sure not to touch the cotton tip, remove the blue shafted swab from the wrapper.
- Insert the swab 2 to 4 inches in the rectum and rotate it for 5-10 seconds.
- Unscrew the cap of the tube making sure not to spill any liquid.
- Immediately place the swab into the tube, bend the blue shaft of the swab until it breaks – be careful not to spill/splash any contents.
- Screw the cap of the tube back on tightly.
- Wash hands again with soap and water.
COLLECTING A URINE SAMPLE
(Tests for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia in the genitals)
If you have had sex with your genitals…
PLEASE NOTE: You should have not urinated for at least ONE HOUR prior to this specimen collection. If you have urinated within the hour, please have a seat and wait to collect this specimen. DO NOT cleanse/wipe the genitals in any way before collecting this specimen.
- Wash hands with soap and water.
- Open urine collection cup. Do not touch the inside of the cup.
- Make sure to collect the first stream of urine in the cup – DO NOT URINATE IN TOILET FIRST AND COLLECT MID-STREAM.
- Fill the urine cup about halfway (30ml).
- Screw the cap back on tightly.
- Wash your hands again with soap and water.
PLEASE NOTE: Urine specimens will be tested for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia ONLY.
